Juana Gaviria Quigley, I am a Colombian/American multi-disciplinary artist who studied Architecture and Fine Arts at Rhode Island School of Design, RISD where I learned the value of process, craft and aesthetics.
My art blurs the boundaries between sculpture, painting and architecture. Through the use of different materials and techniques like assemblages, kite structures, mobiles, folded metal and fabrics, I create visual concepts that produce temporal and sensorial experiences, like asymmetry, unbalanced equilibrium and varied densities.
I´m inspired by Bauhaus ideals of functional and aesthetically pleasing pieces through the clever use of form and color, as well as the work of my favorite artists Paul Klee, Sophie Taeuber Arp and Ray Eames.
My work can be described as having a certain movement and three-dimensionality where the contrast of shapes and colors interact to create geometric abstractions. By actively exploring the relationship between shaped surfaces, embedded planes and the surrounding space, my intention is to create a visual experience that is clever and surprising.
I aim to make art objects that encourage the observer to delight, rest and play in this seemingly ever tense world.
